Event Details
More than twenty years ago, Socrates in the City began as a forum to encourage busy New York City professionals to think about the bigger questions in life. Since then, I’d like to think that we’ve played some small role in inspiring a love of conversation, thinking, and learning in this community. This fall, we’re going back to our roots with a brand new in-person event series: Socrates in the City Monthly Book Club.
The next meeting is December 17th at 6pm; club members will meet at the Union League Club (the beautiful venue is reason alone to join us!) and receive a complimentary copy of the book. Together we’ll read and share the kind of conversations Socrates in the City is known for: asking life’s biggest questions with humor and even, perhaps, a bit of fun. All we ask is that you show up!
The fall book will be Socrates: A Man for Our Times by Paul Johnson.
After the main discussion, stick around for lite bites and cocktails, and time to connect. To gather together with a group of thoughtful, like-minded people and wrestle with the deeper questions of life, God, and other “small topics” is what this community is all about.
So, whether you’re new to Socrates in the City, or have been with us from the beginning, this is your opportunity to dive deeper with meaningful conversations and lasting connections.
About Socrates: A Man for Our Times by Paul Johnson:
In his highly acclaimed style, historian Paul Johnson masterfully disentangles centuries of scarce sources to offer a riveting account of Socrates, who is often hailed as the most important thinker of all time. Johnson provides a compelling picture of Athens in the fifth century BCE, and of the people Socrates reciprocally delighted in, as well as many enlightening and intimate analyses of specific aspects of his personality. Enchantingly portraying “the sheer power of Socrates’s mind, and its unique combination of steel, subtlety, and frivolity,” Paul Johnson captures the vast and intriguing life of a man who did nothing less than supply the basic apparatus of the human mind.
